Robert Downey Jr. Gained 20 Pounds of Muscle for Iron Man 2

US Magazine.com: Wednesday – May 05, 2010 – 4:44pm

Robert Downey Jr. packed on 20 pounds of muscle to reprise his role in Iron Man 2.

“When we did Iron Man 1, we had five months before the shoot to get ready, so we used more traditional, heavy-weight training,” his trainer, Brad Bose, tells UsMagazine.com. This time around, the actor, 45, had just wrapped Sherlock Holmes, and was down to 151 pounds when shooting on the action flick (out May 7) began.

“After [the first routine], Robert felt kind of bored with it and wanted to something a little more exciting… so we decided to do what I call a Rocky IV meets high-tech training,” says Bose, who bulked Downey Jr. up to 175 pounds over the first three to four weeks filming.

Examples: “Instead of doing regular bench presses, we used a bamboo bar… and we would hang plates on rubber bands off the bar… so it was like trying to bench press a snake!” Bose explains. “It bounced all over the place.”

Downey Jr. also pushed “a custom-built wheelbarrow that we modified with 600 to 700 lb. weight stacks” around an obstacle course.

“We went out and bought truck tires, and we used sledgehammers — anywhere from, two 4-lb. sledgehammers in each hand, all the way up to a full 20-lb. sledgehammer — and we were just beating tires with it. We used fire hoses that we filled with sand and water… and we’d drag and whip them to build the shoulder muscles and pecs back up.”

They also juggled “weighted Indian clubs,” hulled around kettlebells and even used a war machine, which Boyes explains is “like a rope with handles on it with a pulley — you suspend yourself from it,” says Bose.

“We tried to find the most unique, and yet funnily enough, inexpensive training stuff to use,” he says. “You couldn’t find more practical stuff to use.”

The two would meet around 9:30 in the morning and work out for an hour-and-a-half at least three days a week. Downey Jr. also trained in kung fu two to three days a week with Eric Oram.

Congratulations to Jose “Jr” Aldo for defending his WEC belt and proudly representing Nova Uniao!
CrossFit ATP and our BJJ school Nova Uniao will be offering a promotional package for both programs. Please inquire for prices and class schedule at (954) 342-9605.

Nova Uniao are the World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champions. We are setting the standard around the world for the best competitors and coaches. This is seen in results both locally and internationally. Whether you are doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defence, fitness, personal development or to compete, who better to do it with than the best? Nova Uniao sets a higher standard as all the representative academies are run by black belt instructors with years of competitive and teaching experience. This ensures that our standard stays at the highest possible level. New techniques and innovations are constantly being developed and are integrated into the syllabus on an ongoing basis, making sure our academies and students are always getting the best, most up to date information and instruction.

Nova Uniao is the team that has the most athletes who have become champions. They started at the white-belt level here and became champions; they did not come from other teams. We are the best team in Brazil nowadays; we are a team that has more great athletes in Jiu-Jitsu and the most number of champions in MMA.

I wanted to take the time and thank Andrea DuCane for giving superb instruction at the HKC!!!

I was blessed to have Andrea as my Team Leader at RKC and RKCII and she was also our special guest for a Level-1 Workshop /Z-Health/FMS at our facility back in November of 09′. She always amazes me with keen eye for detail, clear instruction, genuine support and of course…..TOUGH LOVE! The HKC is a challenging certification that is definitely earned and given away by Andrea. This is what I love about Dragon Door certifications, especially with Andrea DuCane as your instructor!

Twenty seven (27) people registered for the HKC with backgrounds in Martial Arts, NFL, CrossFit, Pilates, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Personal Trainers and fitness enthusiasts. The HKC was challenging, chuck full of information and EVERY attendant gave 100% effort!

A huge THANK YOU to Juan Bacca, Greg Sheppard and La Saun Taylor for your assistance and support. The HKC ran smoothly and efficiently with the help from all of you! I would also like to thank Spring Neal and the NSU staff for making this a special event at the Don Taft building.

Congrats to the HKC’s and we are looking forward to the RKC in Orlando!!!
